Joseph Bartlett founded the cemetery in the early 1800s with the first burial recorded in 1813. Mr. Bartlett allowed nearby families to bury their loved ones in ground he set aside to be used as a burial place for his own family. To be precise, Bartlett Cemetery is located in Section 21 in Pin Oak Township, Madison County, Illinois, on the south side of Goshen Road about one-half mile south of Highway 55. It is situated in a rural area between the outskirts of Edwardsville and Glen Carbon, Illinois.

This same Goshen Road was used as a wagon train route from Vandalia, Illinois to Saint Louis, Missouri. There are many people buried from these wagon trains. Their remains were left there while the families continued their journeys.

On April 26, 1908, a Bartlett Cemetery Association was started and remained active until 1958. On April 3rd, 2004 a reorganization meeting was held and a new Board of Trustees was elected. In the period from 1958 through 2004, the cemetery was maintained and managed informally by a number of volunteers. Their efforts are very much appreciated.
